It doesn’t have to be big to be powerful.

Again, a yoga instructor’s insightful thoughts. Perhaps you think that all I do is go to yoga? At times I wish that were true. Obviously you realize that I’m spending too much time and effort during my yoga practices trying to remember the insightful thoughts my instructor shares, so that I can blog about them later. That is unfortunately true.

Even still, an insightful thought. Once again, she was talking about our poses. And as always, I took it to mean so much more.

Because, as those of you who know me know, I never passed five feet tall, and I think I’m now going in the wrong direction. I try not to confirm that fear. But even though I’m not big – or as a friend told me in high school, “You’re not short, you’re just REALLY not tall.” – I like to think that I’m powerful.

I like to think I’m powerful. I like to think I’m powerful in actual physical strength, which is probably why I’ve been lifting weights for nearly twenty-five years. That and because my muscles develop quickly and well – I’ve got that type of build – which is fun. It makes me feel more powerful to know the weights that I easily handle, like I can walk down a city street and be fine, because I’m strong.

I like to think I’m powerful in presence. I think I try to take up more space than my body actually requires. I think I think big, talk big (and loud), and laugh big (and loud).

I like to think I’m powerful in the effect I have on others. I’ve chosen a helping profession. I’ve built a business around supporting others to identify and make the changes they want in their lives. I feel powerful in my ability to stand quietly in the background as my clients achieve their hopes and dreams.

I like to think I’m powerful in my ability to love. I care for others – big and again loud. I open my heart and home as best I can. I firmly believe there is power in treating others with kindness and compassion, in giving and receiving affection and adoration and love.

I like to think I make a difference. There’s power in making a difference. That’s why I wrote Way Out and why I write this blog. It’s why I do so many things that I do. I delight in the world, and want to do what I can to make it an even better place. To make life even better for myself and those around me. Including those I don’t know.

I’m not big. And I so want to be powerful. I so love being powerful.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, and please share this post with others if it resonates with you!
