I grew up on Horton Hears a Who. Well, I grew up on a lot of Dr. Seuss, especially Fox in Socks, as I had a lisp, and they made me read that book for speech therapy. It was brutal! But I love it now.

In Horton Hears a Who there’s this scene where the Who’s on the dust speck keep shouting, “We are here! We are here! We are here!” so that they don’t get dropped in a vat of boiling oil.

It’s this scene that I thought of as I listened to Rick Hanson interview Jack Kornfield on mindfulness. (It was, needless to say, an amazing interview.)

We are here. We are here. We are here.

This can actually help me be here.

This can help me be here and mindful. It can help me be present. In this moment. Not trying to change it or fix it or move away from it, but just being here in this moment.

Being here. Here. Here.

As I sit and write this, I can feel mild anxiety and restlessness inside me, like I’m uncomfortable in my own skin.

I sit with it. I allow it to be. I allow it to tell me whatever it needs to tell me.

I am here. Here. Here.

As I sit here, I somehow experience a number of emotions. I feel sad and lonely and on edge. I’m not sure why.

But I stay here. Here. Here.

Today was a harder concussion day. I just felt weary and worn out. it could also be the vaccine I got yesterday, though I don’t usually react to vaccines.

I’m just tired, and I’m tired of being tired.

But I’m here. Here. Here.

I allow the feelings to be. I resist my urge to fix them or to jump up and do something. I, since I’m me, put my hand on my heart and remember to be gentle and kind with myself. To offer myself tons of compassion. I have felt unwell and weary for a very long time. No wonder I’m tired of it.

And I stay with it. With me. With all of this.

I stay, as the Who’s did, here. Here. Here.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, and please share this post with others if it resonates with you!
